Welcome

Welcome to Brackenwood Golf Club
Brackenwood Golf Club is a private golf club who play on a municipal golf course owned by the Wirral Borough Council.Just like all other golf clubs in Cheshire we are affiliated to the Cheshire Union of Golf Clubs and through them to the English Golf Union. To all intents and purposes we are very similar to the proprietry Pay & Play courses which have sprung up in the last ten years.
The club was established in 1935 and accordingly we celebrated our 75 birthday in 2010. As many of the existing members will not be around to celebrate our centenary in 2035 we decided we could not let the birthday go by without a celebration. We hired a marquee and following a Saturday Night party we had a golf competition on the Sunday and a barbacue. It was indeed a very great celebration and one all those present will long remember.atnight

The club has organized similar events throughout its many years in existence. The most notable of these were the Pro-Am to celebrate the club's Jubilee in 1985 and the millemnium celebrations in 2000.Interior The Pro-Am was such a great success that it evolved the following year into the Wirral Open Golf Championship  which has continued ever since. It has regularly attracted 180 competitors from as far a field as Surrey, Yorkshire and even Ireland. In 2016 it will be the thirtieth year of the Championship.

There are approximately 180 members with an affiliated ladies section of 45 members. We also have a very thriving junior section which is in the very capable hands of Mr Keith Marsh. In the past ten years a seniors section (60+) has evolved and has now become a very thriving entity. There are a series of competitions on weekdays and they also arrange a variety of golf outings. As you will see from our fixtures we have a very full calendar of competitions each year between March and October with most of them being qualifying competitions. A number of hardy souls also play in the Winter League the format of which depends upon the weather

We are also involved in an inter club league with the other Wirral/Cheshire based municipal clubs. We have known the members of the other clubs for many years and like to think we have a great relationship. On the golf course each of us is trying to win the match in accordance with the true spirit of golf but at the end of the competition its becomes a social event with a great bunch of lads. We also have annual matches with Queen Park GC in Crewe and Walton GC in Warrington. Once again its is a great opportunity to meet like minded golfers and enjoy the ocasional drink.

We have two "Golf Outings" with both venues being chosen by the Captain. The Stag Outing is a long weekend (Friday to Sunday) event where usually two or three courses are played. 18th Hole ConwyGC The Summer Outing is a day visit (Sunday) to a golf course which normally a bit further a field than usual. There are also various groups who arrange week long golfing holidays to exotic locations e.g Scotland and Portugal!

We play our club competitions on a Sunday morning and the tee is reserved for this purpose. A small number (20) do play on a Saturday but must make their own tee time arrangements. Each Wednesday evening is a "club night" when most of the members attend to register their names for the following Sunday's competition. This "club night" is somewhat unique among golf clubs but it helps our finances through Bar Sales, builds camaraderie among the members, allows information to be disseminated to the members and generally is a great social evening. As a result most members know each other and this is reflected in the variety of fourballs playing each week.

At the moment our subscription is £130 per year although all members must pay a green fee to the WBC every time they play. One can buy an annual contract which also permits you to play the other municipal courses on the Wirral and there are also concessions for those aged 60+ and juniors. The green fee is currently £12 for those under 60 years and £8 for those over 60 years.
